Social Emotional Learning

At SCRED, we use the phrase "Social Emotional Learning (SEL)" interchangeably with "behavior MTSS." It is a large umbrella of practices, procedures, and policies (including teaching, prevention, reinforcement, and response strategies) provided to students at every level of the MTSS framework in order to build skills in the areas of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationships Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. The SEL team includes two kinds of positions that each support SEL at different levels of the MTSS framework.

The SEL Services Coordinator focuses on the primary and secondary prevention levels (AKA Tier 1 and Tier 2) and provides systems consultation, training, and coaching to support implementation of school-wide SEL.

Social Behavior Services Coordinators focus on both tertiary prevention (AKA Tier 3) and Special Education. They provide training and coaching regarding: Functional Behavioral Assessments, Behavior Support Plans, behavior-focused federal setting III/IV programs, federal setting placement changes, and restrictive procedures.

These resources are applicable to staff working at any level of the MTSS framework (including Special Education) because Primary Prevention is the foundation of all SEL in a school.
