Social Emotional Learning

We use the phrase "Social Emotional Learning (SEL)" interchangeably with "behavior MTSS."

SEL is an expansive umbrella of practices provided to students at every level of the MTSS framework in order to build skills in the areas of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making.

Our SEL team includes two kinds of positions that each support SEL at different levels of the MTSS framework:

Our SEL Services Coordinator supports Tier 1 and Tier 2, including (examples):

  • Core SEL instruction and other activities during advisory/morning meetings/class connect, etc.
  • School-wide behavior expectations and core behavior management strategies
  • Systematically integrating/embedding SEL into academic instruction
  • Universal screening and assessment
  • Discipline systems — thresholds for referral, office consequence procedures, threat assessment, discipline data review, etc.
  • Mental health supports and procedures — e.g., suicide and self-harm risk assessment
  • Community relations and strategic planning regarding SEL — e.g., school board presentations, handbooks, newsletters, parent handouts, etc.
  • Adult SEL — meeting rituals that support teamwork and collaboration, adult self-care, culture and climate work, etc.
  • ADSIS/Tier 2 consultation: developing the menu of standardized “plug and play” interventions we offer, how we match students to them, what curriculum we use, how we measure progress, when we move to a Tier 3 level of support, etc.
Our two Social Behavior Services Coordinators support Tier 3 and Special Education, including (examples):

  • Working with Problem Solving Teams on Tier 3 cases to intensify and individualize interventions
  • Training and coaching regarding curriculum, strategies, progress monitoring, and other intervention elements at the Tier 3 and SpEd levels
  • Consultation on optimizing school-wide systems to support high-needs students (e.g., how special education students interact with discipline procedures)
  • Training and coaching regarding Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Support Plans
  • Systems-level consultation regarding behavior-focused federal setting III/IV programs
  • Consultation regarding federal setting placement changes, restrictive procedures, and manifestation determinations

Cross-District SEL Website

The cross-district SEL website is a neutrally-branded, community-facing resource that is linked from each of our member districts' websites.

  • It offers unique resources to studentsfamilies, and educators.
  • It hosts our locally-developed Be Good People SEL curriculum. Educators across the country visit the SEL website every day to access Be Good People.
  • At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many districts created "virtual calming rooms." The SEL website was originally created to support our member districts with the Calming Strategies Toolbox, a version of a virtual calming room that was designed to be useful regardless of learning model.

Tier 1

NOTE: These resources are applicable to staff working at any level of the MTSS framework (including Special Education) because Tier 1 is the foundation of all SEL in a school.

  • SEL Classroom Guide What does SEL look like from the perspective of a classroom teacher?
  • Be Good People Curriculum Our free, locally-developed, K-12 SEL curriculum. All schools in our member districts offer explicit SEL instruction in their core, and over half of them use Be Good People in this capacity. Other curriculums used at tier 1 in our districts include Second Step.

Tier 2

  • Tier 2 Interventions When the core alone isn't enough, we need highly-efficient standardized interventions that we can quickly match students with. Our index of Tier 2 interventions includes integrity checklists, resources, progress monitoring tips, and more!
  • Explicit SEL Instruction Browse an index of SEL curriculums, many of which are freely available, to help you plan an effective scope and sequence of instruction for your Tier 2 intervention.

Tier 3

  • Tier 3 Interventions Guidance on planning Tier 3 behavior interventions and collecting useful progress monitoring data. When our standard "plug and play" Tier 2 interventions are not sufficient, we need to intensify and individualize.
